The 1941 winner, whose son also became a racing driver. Raced both pre-and post-World War Two, and was extremely strong on dirt ovals. Davis' win in 1941 came about as a shared drive; he was in 12th place after 60 laps when Mauri Rose, his team mate had mechanical problems. Davis wasn't happy when asked to leave the car, but ended up in the record books as a winner of the Indianapolis 500, despite never personally leading a single lap. During World War Two, Davis served in the US Navy. Floyd began his racing career as a mechanic and car builder, working with his father, before developing as a driver. After World War Two, he returned to sprint car racing as a driver initially, before retiring and becoming a mechanic.
