Retired after being burnt in a racing crash, shortly after his Indianapolis 500 win in 1951. Later used his experiences to promote driving safety in high schools. Wallard started racing in 1932, initially in midget and then sprint cars. However the money he got from racing didn't pay for his family, so Lee took a day job as a bulldozer driver. After serving in the US Navy during World War Two, Wallard became one of the better drivers in Indycar racing immediate post-war. Wallard did attempt a comeback in 1954 but it came to naught and died of a heart-attack, aged only 52 in 1963.
