Died suddenly, possibly a suicide. He was a businessman before, during and after racing, until his death. Noted for his flamboyant shirts and dress sense, Daponte raced in both single seaters and sportscars, but also gave the Indianapolis 500 a whirl. Unfortunately though his career was overshadowed by his involvement in the 1954 Formula Libre Buenos Aires City Grand Prix, when he crashed into the pitlane and unfortunately killed the team owner and engine specialist Enrico Plate.
