Retired in 1964 and stayed away from the sport, although brother Joe raced on for a while after that. Battled drink and gambling addictions before dying from cancer. Troy was born in Oklahoma, but due to his family trying to find work during the Great Depression, he lived in Texas and then California, where he started his racing career, using his cousin's birth certificate, in 1945. His father had suffered a serious injury at work so Ruttman's family were happy to support him racing at a young age. He was excellent in midgets and roadsters and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1952.
