Fierce but enthusiastic - and very popular - competitor killed in testing at Hockenheim in an Alfa Romeo. A likeable man with a ready smile, he loved trying out other forms of fast transport. Depailler actually trained as a dentist when he caught the racing bug riding motorcycles and gave up his studies to enrol at the Winfield School in 1966, but only after he completed his military service.
