Mercedes legend, who also worked as a mechanic. Particularly brilliant in road races, he won the 1924 Targa Florio. However he was also successful in GP's and sportscars. Werner initially joined Mercedes as an engineer and test driver in 1911, but it wasn't until the marque concentrated properly on motor racing in the 1920's that he began to race. Werner has the honour of being the first ever race winner at the Nurburgring circuit, winning the opening race in 1926. Werner's last races were in 1930 when he appeared at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, but sadly he died just two years later after a short illness.
