A member of the Austrian nobility, Freddy's life was changed by World War 2 when his father was arrested as a possible war criminal. After struggling in Germany, Kottulinsky moved to Sweden, riding a Lambretta scooter from Germany to Sweden, and opened a repair shop there. He later became 1966 Swedish F3 champion. Probably better known as a rally driver, whose finest hour was winning the Paris-Dakar rally in 1980. His down-to-earth manner was much admired and liked. Later involved in track promotions and driver training. Died after a short illness at his home in Sweden, after returning to Germany to live for some while.
