Was a GP2 stalwart, but then moved to ALMS, then Argentine touring cars and FIA GT. He was such a success in TC2000, it led to a surprise call-up to Formula 1 with the USF1 team. However the team's collapse left poor Lopez out of a drive at a time of year when most other top seats in other series had been taken. He returned to TC2000 where he continued to win titles, but in 2014, moved into the WTCC after performing well in an one-off race in the category in 2013. Lopez proved his TC2000 prowess was no isolated success, and Jose Maria won the WTCC title with aplomb, and remained in the series in 2015 to defend his title, which he did successfully. In 2017, Lopez changed tack to compete in the World Endurance Championship and remained there in 2021, winning Le Mans that year. In 2022, he raced in the IMSA Sportscar series. Since then, he has been in the World Endurance Championship.
