Later became a flamboyant, spectacular star in NASCAR. Died of complications of AIDS after contracting HIV. Richmond was 1978 USAC sprint car Rookie of the Year, a honour he repeated in 1980, this time for the Indianapolis 500. In 1986, he shared the Driver of the Year award in NASCAR, a series where he raced 185 times, winning 13 times, over 8 seasons. Due to his illness he left NASCAR towards the end of 1987. Richmond was also a keen pilot.
