Vastly experienced racer who had a successful 1921, winning at Fresno and Beverly Hills. Indeed Joe was one of the top drivers of the early 1920's. In 1926 and 1927, he was blackmailed by a gang to work on their stolen cars, often changing numberplates and the like as he had the choice of doing that or seeing his family being killed. But when his wife was threatened, he snapped, confessed and went to the police. He was cleared of any charges, but left bankrupt, he briefly returned to racing in 1931, when based in Hammond, Indiana. He later moved to California for a new life.
