A popular and regular visitor to oldtimer and vintage meetings, he died, after a long fight against liver cancer. Boyd was a veteran of World War Two, serving in the United States Air Army Force. Johny was best remembered as a midget racer, winning at Kokomo, Gardena and Fresno from the mid-1950's onwards. Boyd became a member of the Champion Spark Plug 100 MPH Club and would often go to schools accordingly and teach students safe driving. Boyd also raced in BRDA Indoor Racing events. Boyd was inducted into many Halls of Fame during his lifetime, with perhaps the most notable being the Motor Sports Press Association Hall of Fame.
