A pre and post-war motorcyclist, beginning his career in the 1930's, he later ran motorcycle clubs in the 1940's and 1950's. Kuhnke didn't actually take up racing on four wheels until 1950. He largely raced in Formula 3, initially in a Cooper MkIV and then in a Cooper MKVIII. Kuhnke became the runner up of the 1953 West German Formula 3 Championship. Kuhnke then continued racing until shortly after his disappointing Formula 1 spell in the early 1960's.
