Decent Formula 3000 driver, one of East Germany's better drivers since reunification but who was more solid then spectacular in the series, and didn't really make that quantum leap towards Formula 1. Lost his F3000 seat in 2004 and then virtually disappeared from racing. However from 2009 onwards, he has mainly been racing in historic rallies and races as well as offroad events from time to time. Schmidt also raced in German Formula Renault and German Formula 3.
