Tragically killed during the last lap of the season, at Magny Cours, after colliding with Thomas Biagi. His car hit the back of Biagi, went into the air and crashed into a wall. It remained, thankfully, the only fatality during the Formula 3000 era. Campos was taken to hospital, but died of his injuries, aged only 19. The previous year saw Marco won the 1994 European Formula Opel title and he also had a string of karting success in his homeland behind him but his death potentially robbed Grand Prix racing of a real talent. Marco's younger brother, Julio, later became a driver in stock car racing, naming his first son Marco in honour of his brother.
