Died after a stroke after a period of poor health. He was involved (Honorary President) of the Enzmann racing and road car concern and even took part in a road test for the marque in 2001. He was still attending historic events until only a few weeks before his death. He retired from racing in 1968 after his father died. Walter then took over his father's business before also running restaurants and was involved in real estate. He also worked as a TV commentator.
