Died after a long battle with ill-health. Retired, in his 80's, from building and restoring cars in his workshop near Johannesburg. Serrurier built nearly fifteen Formula 1 chassis bearing his name, initially basing his design on a Cooper T51 he raced. Doug started racing bikes in speedway events, including in the UK, but his very first race was back in 1938 in motorcycling and then on grass tracks before taking up car racing in 1956, which he continued until 1970. Serrurier became a respected competitor and entrant in South African F1 racing, winning twice - once at Grand Central in 1961 and then at Westmead in 1962. Serrurier stopped racing in the early 1970's to concentrate fully on his workshop. He served in the South African Air Force transport division in World War Two. Serrurier also organised and took part in stunt events in the 1950's but his real legacy is helping many drivers with a chance of racing through his car building - including Jackie Pretorius and Piet de Klerk.
