Went back to the US and CART after Formula 1, but was badly injured in a testing crash at Elkhart Lake in 2006. His recovery was slow but he did return to racing - in Grand-Am in 2008 and 2009, in trucks in 2010 and ALMS in 2011. He is no longer racing now, however, and is involved in the financial and logistical side of the family Da Matta Design clothing business. Cristiano's father, Antonio, also raced and competed in touring cars in Brazil. Da Matta's finest moment in racing came when he won the 2002 Champcar series, although he also won championships in Indy Lights and Formula 3.
