Car salesman and mechanic who started racing in 1903, and was mainly based around the Illinois area. Gibbons had a long-standing relationship with the Velie Motor Car Company, which was based in nearby Moline. Gibbons was also adept at American football and was part of the very first Watseka High School football team, and later moved to the Beecher area of Illinois. He attempted to qualify, but didn't race, the Velie as part of his mechanic and relief duties but withdrew during qualifying to give more senior Velie drivers a better chance of making the race.
