Duvall Wallace began racing very early, just being sixteen when he started racing in dirt track events in 1918. By this time, he was already in his first employment; working as a mechanic in a garage. A relief driver and riding mechanic mainly, including for Deacon Litz, Wallace also worked as a factory manager for Ford, before moving to Florida in 1940 to set up his own dealership, initially in Fort Myers and then also in Sarasota. Back in his Indianapolis days, where he lived for most of his life, he was also the chauffeur for the battalion chief of the Indianapolis fire brigade.
