Now runs a gear construction and repair business workshop near Ammerswil. Amweg is best remembered for his hillclimb prowess, becoming Swiss champion a record fourteen times between 1973 and 1997 in a Brabham, Martini and a Lola. This included seven wins of the Saint-Ursanne hillclimb, with his last win coming in 1998. Fredy got into the sport through his father who was a kart builder, beginning his career in 1967. Before and whilst racing, Fredy worked in the family tractor construction business, founded by his grandfather. One of Fredy's daughters and three of his sons have also raced in various forms.
