Designer and engineer who moved up the Jordan ranks to become chief designer in 2006, for the re-branded Midland team. Then stayed with the outfit when they became Force India in 2008, but he then left them in 2010 to move to Sauber. In 2012, he left Sauber and worked at Scuderia Toro Rosso until joining McLaren in 2019. He remained there until he joined Alfa Romeo (ex-Sauber) again in 2023. Before he entered motor racing, James was a long-time data engineer with Lotus Engineering, having joined the business when he graduated as a mechanical engineer from Nottingham University. During his time in the sport, he has been involved in aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics as well as race car design.
