Kensington, West London

Nationality:

Great Britain

Vanwall (1954-1960)

Initially a racer in cars and bikes, the family wealth (his father was Charles Vandervell, who formed the CAV business which produced diesel fuel injection equipment) allowed him to set up a precision bearings company, but Tony made his own wealth from the success of the company, creating the famous Thin-Wall bearings. Came into Grand Prix via BRM, but then set up his own team, winning the first constructor's championship. However, the whole involvement had a negative effect on his health and he retired in 1959, deeply affected by Stuart Lewis-Evans' death. First name was Guy. As well as racing, Vandervell was a philantrophist, donating many millions to support the Royal College of Surgeons amongst others.
