German Formula 3
Formula 3 has been an important element of motor racing in both East and West Germany since the late 1940s. Motor racing in the west was organised by three clubs, ADAC, (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club), AvD (Automobilclub von Deutschland) and DMV (Deutscher Motorsport Verband) and in 1970 ADAC organised the ADAC Preis der Formel 3, the first F3 championship since the end of the Deutsche Meisterschaft Formel 3 in 1953. Although organised at club level rather than by the national governing body, then called the ONS (Oberste Nationale Sportbehörde), this was equivalent to the championships organised in Britain by the BARC, BRSCC, BRDC and MRD, and these ADAC champions should be seen as German F3 champions.
In 1974, the Polifac Formel 3 Trophy was organised, a series of ten races in Germany but open to drivers of any nationality, and was won by Italian driver Giorgio Francia. Then, in 1975, the ONS series replaced the ADAC title, initially as the ONS Pokal der Formel 3 before settling on the name Deutsche Formel 3 Meisterschaft from 1978. The championship continued to the end of the 2002 season when it merged with the French championship to create the Formula 3 Euro Series. In 2012, this ran alongside the FIA's new European Formula Three Championship but for 2013 they were merged into a single series, incorporating four races in Germany.
