Was Renault's F1 test and reserve driver, but was dropped. Returned to sportscars in 2004, for Audi, in the LMES and major endurance races, winning his 1st race back, at Sebring. It led to a incredibly successful spell in endurance racing - he took his second Sebring win in 2006. He followed that up with an ALMS title in the same year, then retained his title in 2007. Won Le Mans in 2008 and a 3rd Sebring win in 2009, then in 2013, won his 3rd Le Mans, the Le Mans Series title and the WEC title. That was the trigger for him to call it a day and retire from driving with immediate effect. He is now an ambassador for Audi, and works in management, broadcasting, driver coaching and does historic racing. In 2018, he became Audi's Formula E team boss which he remained in until their withdrawal in 2021.
