Raced in sportscars for a while, before ending his competitive driving career in 2003. Now retired, he ran a model company in Cheltenham but now runs a fabricated metal product manufacturing company. Arnold's father, Richard, ran a racing team and this initially got Arnold interested in the sport. He later drove for his father's team in British Formula 3, doing especially well in the national class in the category, winning a race in 1992. Steve also competed in Germany's Formula 3 series for three years on a part-time basis. For a while, Arnold returned to racing in the late 2000's, to compete in historic sportscar racing.
