A misunderstanding with Bertrand Gachot and Pacific denied Gavin a GP debut in 1995, but he has led more GP's than most as the long-time driver of the FIA safety car. But this was not his only motorsport foray, for he has been in endurance events, GT's and the Porsche Supercup since. For many years he was racing sportscars (IMSA Sportscar Series) and GT's, winning the GT ALMS title in 2005 and 2007. He also raced in the ADAC GT Master series. Won the British F3 title in 1995, but this came after a disappointing spell in F3000 in 1994, which resulted in him dropping down back to F3. Won the 1991 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award. In 2021, he retired from racing to set up his own driving academy.
