Legendary French racer killed in the race of the Coupe de Salon at Montlhery. Although he never won in F1, he took numerous non-championship wins between 1949 and 1952. He was also a member of the French Resistance during World War 2. A garage owner from Clermont-Ferrand, Louis started racing in motorcycle events in the 1930's. He then moved into cars and hillclimbing in 1938 before being at his peak immediately after the War, winning the French National Championship four years in a row from 1949 onwards. Amongst his notable wins were the 1949 Belgian Grand Prix and the Dutch Grand Prix in 1950 and 1951, but he is probably best remembered for his win at Le Mans in 1950 with his son Jean-Louis.
