For a long time, Dave ran a charter boat business in North Queensland, but stopped in the mid 2010's and moved to Mandalay, Queensland. He retired from racing after losing partial use of his left arm in a road accident outside the factory of his abortive GRD team in the early 1970's and by and large stayed away from the sport since. Walker, who initially trained as an accountant, enjoyed some hillclimbing as a weekend past-time and then decided to race full-time. He moved to Britain in 1962, which didn't go well, but returned in 1966 with more success. Dave was a quite brilliant driver in Formula 3, taking the 1970 Lombank and 1971 Shell and Forward Trust British Formula 3 Championships against very strong opposition in each series.
