Giovanni an a team in sportscars, but returned to the tracks as a driver, in a surprise move in 2014, by racing in Euro V8's. Giovanni also runs an insurance business in Sicily and works as a consultant in the field. Lavaggi's Formula 1 career saw him as a backmarker but he won the Daytona 24 Hours in 1995, won two races in the Sportscar World Championship in 1999 and 2001, and also became the Interserie Champion in 1993. Lavaggi is a qualified mechanical engineer who followed his father into racing, but initially started on bikes and then in rallying before moving into circuit racing in the 1980's.
