A veteran of racing, Steve still continues to race and has had a long association with Trans-Am in particular. Whilst at his peak, he stopped racing in 1992 to concentrate on business interests before returning in 1996 to compete in the North American Touring Car Series, winning the Independent title that year. He then formed, ran and raced with his own Trans-Am team which started a management career in the sport, which has included managing a team in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Series. He recently moved the team and the associated race and restoration shop, to Carson City, Nevada. He established a company in his name in Australia in 2021, but now mainly concentrates on his Petty Industries company, which amongst other things concentrates on specialty tools for gas and electric utilities and professional motorsports in both the US and Australia.
