3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Two entries arrived from McLaren, Tyrrell, Lotus, Brabham, Ferrari, Shadow, Williams, Hill, Hesketh and Ensign. March again had three entries. Single entries arrived from BRM, Surtees, Parnelli, Fittipaldi and Maki. Penske was present with a customer March again, but this was the race at which Donohue was killed. The Ensigns were No 31 and No 33 on the entry list, Chris Amon having been persuaded to try the newer car. In between them at No 32 was Harald Ertl’s ex-Stiller Hesketh 308 in Warsteiner livery, the only real privateer. The returning BRM and Surtees, the second Ensign and the extra Hesketh brought the number of entries up to 30. Three cars failed to start due to accidents, so the Maki was the only car that did not qualify.

The seven spare cars present were a Tyrrell 007, a Brabham BT44B, a Ferrari 312T, a BRM P201, a Shadow DN5 each for Pryce and Jarier, and a Parnelli VPJ4. It was unusual for McLaren not to have a spare car. Hill, Hesketh and Fittipaldi also came without backup, the Hesketh 308C having been left at home for revisions.

In appalling rain, the organisers were persuaded to call off the race after pleas from the GPDA and from FOCA. Denis Jenkinson, a man from another era, was not happy about this. At least he couldn’t blame Jackie Stewart this time.
