3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

After the deserted look of the South American paddocks, there was a much fuller field for the South African GP. The teams with two cars were McLaren, Tyrrell, Lotus, Brabham, March, Ferrari, Shadow, Williams and Hill. BRM, Surtees, Hesketh, Parnelli, Penske and Fittipaldi each ran one car. The Ensign team was absent again. Four local cars made up the numbers: a McLaren M23, a Tyrrell 007 and two Lotus 72Es, bringing the total to 28 entries.

March had the new 751 design, Ferrari had brought two of the new 312Ts, and Hill had the first Hill GH1, although at this point is was called a Lola T371. Among the new cars built to existing designs was a new Lotus 72E which was chassis 9, not chassis 10 as would have been expected if the new chassis 5 was genuinely regarded as a new car. A Tyrrell 007 and a Shadow DN5 were also new, but the identity of the Tyrrell is a puzzle. Both Autosport and Motor Sport called it 007/6, but 007/5 hadn’t appeared yet. When it next appeared it was called 007/5, so that’s what it’s called here.

Four teams had brought spare cars: a McLaren M23, a Tyrrell 007, a Brabham BT44B, and an old Ferrari 312B3. No spare Lotus, which was unusual.
