3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Motoring News 6 Aug 1970 race report pp12-14 and 'Paddock Potterings' pp14-15 (both by MGD). Sport Auto Septembre 1970 pp36-42, including 'Les Voitures en Course' (by Gérard Crombac). Powerslide September 1970 pp24-27 (by Dieter Stappert). Michael Bowler added chassis numbers to Motor's report. Dieter Stappert's Powerslide report was rich in data but made no mention of car identities.

The works entries were two Lotus 72s plus a 49C for Fittipaldi; two Brabham BT33s, two McLaren M14As and the M14D now resurrected, two Tyrrell-Marches, two STP-Marches, just two BRMs this time as Eaton's entry was rejected, two Matra MS120s, and two Ferraris. The Tyrrell and Ferrari teams had spare cars as usual, and Rodriguez had a new P153 as a spare. The single-car ‘works' teams were Surtees with his TS7, Redman driving Williams' De Tomaso and Silvio Moser with his Bellasi. The privateers were Rob Walker's 49C for Hill, Crabbe's March 701 for Peterson, the STP-March 701 for Andretti and a new March 701 appearing for the first time for Hubert Hahne, sponsored by his Lamborghini dealership, bringing the total to 25 entries, of which 21 could start. With more competitive entries at every race, qualifying was getting tougher for the drivers without a guaranteed start. Beltoise and Hill needed their guarantees, leaving Redman and De Adamich unlucky. Moser and Hahne were never in the running. Stewart had a spare March 701, as usual, Rodriguez had a spare BRM P153, and Ickx and Regazzoni shared the spare Ferrari 312B, but it did not wear a 'T' so was not noticed by Autosport.

Hulme's McLaren M14A had a new tub at this race to replace the one damaged at Zandvoort. Stommelen's Brabham BT33 was new, replacing the car damaged at the British GP, and both BT33s now had inboard rear brakes. Pescarolo had damaged MS120/1 at the British GP, so was back in MS120/2, rebuilt after his accident at the French GP. The STP March had new rear suspension designed by McNamara's Josef Karasek who was in attendance as well as Francis McNamara. Andretti's Indy McNamara had taken pole position at Indianapolis Raceway Park the previous weekend and had won at Continental Divide in June, so the March 701 carried a US-made rear wing and a McNamara-inspired front bib spoiler.
