3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Autosport 29 Oct 1970 pp7- (report by David Phipps). Motor Sport December 1970 pp1332-1333,1336 (by ARM, the 27-year-old Andrew Marriott having returned from the Petonyer-Team March outfit to become Assistant Editor of Motor Sport). Motoring News 29 Oct 1970 pp1,9-11 (also by ARM). Sport Auto Decembre 1970 pp24-30, including 'Les Voitures en Course' (by Gérard Crombac). Autocar 29 Oct 1970 pp23-26 (by Eoin Young). The Motor Racing Year No 2 p122-126 (by Anthony Pritchard). Autocar continued to give all chassis numbers on the grid.

The organisers paid for the cars to be transported from Watkins Glen and then back to New York, and only accepted 18 entries. These were two cars each from Tyrrell, Ferrari, Matra, McLaren, March Engineering, Brabham, BRM and Lotus, plus one from Surtees and Rob Walker's Lotus. GPDA President Jo Bonnier had secured an entry, but this was replaced by the second Tyrrell entry after pressure from FOCA. Entries from Frank Williams and Colin Crabbe were rejected, as were the second Surtees for Bell, the third BRM of Eaton and the McLaren-Alfa for De Adamich. BRM were the only team with a spare car, so March Engineering's spare March 701 had managed to go the whole season without being raced once. The identity of the spare P153 was only revealed by Motoring News where Marriott said it was P153/04, the car practiced by Peter Westbury at Watkins Glen. However, in Motor Sport, the same author recorded it as P153/03. The ex-Westbury reference makes 04 more likely to be correct, and Jabby Crombac at Sport Auto also called the car 04, so Motor Sport's reference to 03 can be dismissed as a typographical error.
