3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

There were two entries from each of Lotus, Tyrrell, Shadow and Williams; and three from McLaren, Brabham, BRM and Surtees. There was no Ferrari, no works March following Williamson's death, no Ensign as there was no time to repair the car, and no Tecno either. Ferrari had withdrawn the 312B3s for a major review, and Ickx took the opportunity to drive the third McLaren. The third Brabham was being raced by Stommelen, as De Adamich was not expected back for some time. The three privateers were Embassy Racing with Hill's Shadow, Space Racing with the stockbroker March 731, and Lec with the works hire March 731 which arrived in the works transporter, bringing the total to 23. Hesketh Racing decided to "take a breather". The three spare cars were Peterson's Lotus 72, Stewart's Tyrrell 005 in side-radiator, wedge-nose form, and a spare BRM P160E used by Lauda. There was no spare McLaren as Ickx was in it, no spare Brabham yet available, and no spare Shadow as Oliver's car had not been repaired since the Dutch GP. With the struggling Ferrari and Tecno teams absent, every car present was designed, built and maintained in England and used an engine designed and built in England. Yes, the same England that had just designed and built the Austin Allegro. Curious, isn't it?
