3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Autosport 12 Sep 1974 pp12-21 (by Pete Lyons). Motoring News 12 Sep 1974 pp10-13,24 (by 'AH' Alan Henry). Motor Sport October 1974 pp1057-1060 (by 'DSJ' Denis Jenkinson). Autocar 14 Sep 1974 pp30-32 (by Ray Hutton). Sport Auto Octobre 1974 pp51-72 (by Gérard Crombac). Autocourse 1974/75 (edited by Mike Kettlewell) reproduced Pete Lyons' reports from Autosport, so included very little information that had not already been published.

The entry list started with 22 F1 Association entries, first the two-car teams from Lotus, Tyrrell, McLaren, Brabham, March, Ferrari, BRM, Shadow, Surtees and Williams, and third cars from Yardley-McLaren and BRM. Non-Association members were single-car constructors Amon, Hesketh, Ensign and Trojan, the two Embassy-Hill Lolas, Kinnunen's Surtees and three privateer Brabhams: Hexagon Racing's Brabham BT44 and both the Finotto BT42s. Ian Ashley did not arrive with the ex-Hexagon Brabham BT42 and the second Finotto entry was declined, leaving 31 entries. The Maki had been rebuilt and there was a suggestion Dave Walker may race it, but it was not entered. The spare cars in use were a Lotus 72, a Tyrrell 007, a Marlboro-McLaren M23 and a Shadow DN3, but also in attendance and mentioned by Alan Henry in 'In the paddock' were a Brabham BT44, a Lola T370 and a Hesketh 308. The second Finotto Brabham also became a spare, so that made 39 cars, although Lyons only made it 38. Maybe that third Lola wasn't there after all. There was no spare Ferrari, no spare BRM and no spare Yardley-McLaren M23 this time, and as usual no spare March, Surtees or Williams. Jenkinson mentioned that the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA) as the F1 Association was now starting to be called, decided the pit allocation and left the Ensign, Amon, Trojan, Hill Lolas, Kinnunen and Finotto Brabhams on a grass verge at the end of the pitlane. The non-qualifiers were the unlucky Dolhem in the second Surtees, Facetti who had made the Finotto Brabham go better than ever, Bell who lost a lot of time with a water leak in the other Surtees, Amon whose dreadful season was coming to a suitably uncompetitive end, and Kinunnen, confirming that both he and his car had been completely out of their depth. Neither the Trojan nor Amon marques would ever appear again in F1. Token had already gone, and Lyncar and Maki had completed their first seasons without starting a single world championship race. Maybe the F1 malarkey wasn't as easy as it looked.
