3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Autocar 1 June 1974 pp24-26 (by Ray Hutton). Sport Auto Juillet 1974 pp43-50 (by Gérard Crombac). Autocourse 1974/75 (edited by Mike Kettlewell) reproduced Pete Lyons' reports from Autosport, so included very little information that had not already been published.

With entries restricted at the tight Monegasque circuit, the F1 Association took 21 of the available places for Lotus, Tyrrell, McLaren, Brabham, March, Ferrari, BRM, Shadow, Surtees and Williams, with BRM and McLaren fielding third cars but Williams only fielding one. Embassy-Hill had two Lolas as usual, and the non-member constructors at this race were Ensign, Trojan, Hesketh and Amon. The Token's entry was refused and the only privateer allowed an entry was Hexagon, bringing the total to 28 entries. There were 12 spare cars; far more than usual. Lotus had brought Lotus 72s to race so one of the Lotus 76s was a spare. McLaren had a spare in Marlboro livery and another spare in Yardley livery, and the other spare cars were Tyrrell 006/2, a Brabham BT42/44, two Ferrari 312B3s, a BRM P201, a Shadow DN3, a Surtees TS16, the second Williams FW and a Lola T370. Hesketh only had one car, as Hunt had damaged one of the cars testing at Anderstorp, but did have two yachts.

'Jenks notation' had spread through Standard House, as AH was referring to Brambilla's March as "741/2-(2)" as well as confusingly calling the spare Surtees "TS16/03-2". Autosport were having none of this revisionism, and reported exactly what it said on the chassis plate, and exactly what was stamped into the engine block, in the case of engine numbers. So Autosport's report referred to Frank Williams cars as "FW-03" and "FW-02" but Motor Sport called them "IR-04" and "IR-02". Crombac had quickly given up on his "741/3" in Belgium and was calling Brambilla's car "741/2", and also called the two Iso-Marlboros FW/2 and FW/3. To add to the confusion, Pace crashed his Surtees TS16/02 during the race, but it appeared at the next GP as if nothing had happened. Could it have swapped chassis plates with TS16/03? Sport Auto didn't help in this respect as Crombac had Mass in TS16/02 and Pace in TS16/04 with TS16/03 as the spare.
