3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Autosport 27 Jun 1974 pp10-19 (by Pete Lyons). Motoring News 27 Jun 1974 pp9-13 (by 'AH' Alan Henry). Motor Sport August 1974 pp840-842 (by 'DSJ' Denis Jenkinson). Autocar 6 Jul 1974 pp32-33 (by John Blunsden). Sport Auto Aout 1974 pp34-40 (by Pete Lyons). Autocourse 1974/75 (edited by Mike Kettlewell) reproduced Pete Lyons' reports from Autosport, so included very little information that had not already been published. John Blunsden's report in Autocar was a week later and significantly shorter than Hutton's usual.

The F1 Association teams had 23 entries this time, the usual two each of Lotus, Tyrrell, McLaren, Brabham, March, Ferrari, BRM, Shadow, Surtees and Williams, plus the Yardley-McLaren, the third BRM and a provisional entry for John Surtees in a new development TS16. Non-member entries were accepted for two Embassy-Hill Lolas, single cars from constructors Theodore-Ensign, Trojan and Hesketh, and privateer Hexagon Racing, making 29 entries. The Lyncar, Token, Maki and Amon were all absent, Token blaming the F1 Association "closed shop" but the other three were not really ready. Kinnunen and the Finotto Brabhams were also missing. The nine spare cars, taking care not to double-count the Surtees, were a Lotus 76, Tyrrell 006/2, Marlboro-McLaren M23, Brabham BT44, Ferrari 312B3, Shadow DN3, Hesketh 308, Lola T370 and Yardley-McLaren M23, so there were 38 cars present, 30 of which were from the F1 Association and just eight from non-members. So many of the pits had been bagged by the F1 Association for the spare cars that the non-members were all crowded together down the unfashionable end of the pitlane. BRM and Surtees were both swapping numbers between cars making it very difficult to know who used what in practice. Pace had fallen out with the Surtees team and John Surtees was too busy to take up his entry so the only Surtees runner was Mass, first in the development car and then in his regular car after he pranged the new car at the chicane. The development car was in "Mk 3" form, which Surtees denoted by adding a "-3" suffix to its chassis number - "TS16-05-3" - which unfortunately clashed with the "Jenks notation" that was then being developed. This Mk 3 form moved the radiators to the back of the car under the rear wing, and removed the "flat top" extensions. 25 starters were allowed, so the only non-qualifiers were Schenken in the Trojan and van Lennep in the second Williams. Pete Lyons did the report for Sport Auto, which meant changes from the chassis number formats usually used by Crombac. The two March 741s were shown in "Jenks notation", "741/1-2" and "741/2-2" and the Surtees TS16s had the "-2" and "-3" suffices that denoted Mk 2 and Mk 3 form. Crombac dispensed with the Jenks notation when he returned for the French GP report.
