3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Autosport 4 Apr 1974 pp-10-17 (by Pete Lyons). Motoring News 4 Apr 1974 pp9-13 (by 'AH' Alan Henry). Motor Sport May 1974 pp431-433,437 (by 'AH' Alan Henry). L'Automobile No 336 Mai 1974 p75-81 (by Gérard Flocon). Autosport, Motoring News and Motor Sport contained the most thorough reports in 1974, followed by Sport Auto and Autocar, which both listed any car used in practice. Autocourse 1974/75 (edited by Mike Kettlewell) reproduced Pete Lyons' reports from Autosport, so included very little information that had not already been published. Mike Doodson's reports for Motor contained relatively little additional data.

The entries were two each from Lotus, Tyrrell, Brabham, March, Ferrari, Surtees and Williams; three each from McLaren and BRM; and one each from Hesketh and Embassy-Hill-Lola. The Shadow team was absent due to Peter Revson's fatal accident during testing, and the Ensign was expected but did not arrive. The one regular privateer was the Hexagon Racing Brabham, but there were four local South African entries, with a McLaren M23, two Lotus 72s and Tyrrell 004, making 27 entries in total. Only one spare car was brought out, a Lotus 72 for Ronnie Peterson. The new cars at this race were the BRM P201 and the two Lotus 76s. The Lotus 76s were called JPS/9 and JPS/10, but as Pete Lyons pointed out in Autosport, "in ten years' time historians will call it Lotus 76-2". Having its first championship race was the Hesketh 308, making Hesketh the 23rd 3-litre Formula 1 constructor.
