3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

The F1 Association had 21 entries again: two-car teams from Lotus, Tyrrell, McLaren, Brabham, March, Ferrari, BRM, Shadow, Surtees and Williams, plus the Yardley-McLaren, the third BRM staying at home this time. Non-member entries were accepted for two Embassy-Hill Lolas, single cars from constructors Ensign and Hesketh, and privateers Leo Kinnunen and Hexagon, making 27 entries. The entries of Trojan, Lyncar, Token and Maki were all declined by the organisers, triggering a long-repressed debate about the dominance of the Formula One Association. The six spare cars in use were a Lotus 76, a Marlboro McLaren M23, a Brabham BT44, a Ferrari 312B3, a Shadow DN3, and a Yardley McLaren M23. Also present but unused were Tyrrell 006/2 and an extra McLaren M23 which was on a trailer as advertising material. It had now become the norm for F1 Association teams to take a spare car to races, the exceptions being March, BRM and Williams. Of the non-Association teams, Hesketh and Lola were also starting to field spare cars.

Merzario was replaced by Richard Robarts after a few laps of practice, as the Italian was nursing a sore thumb injured at Imola, but Robarts later lost the drive when Belso crashed his Williams in the warm-up. It had been intended to have 25 starters, so Kinunnen was then promoted to starter to replace Robarts, and Schuppan also started the Ensign unofficially, being allowed to continue.

March had rebuilt another of the 741s almost as new, so Jenkinson explained his new notation, "The March that Stuck crashed so extensively at Monaco was virtually scrapped and a new one built around the same identification plate; so that we can justifiably call it 741/1-2, in the same way that Brambilla's car is 741/2-2 after being written-off in Spain earlier in the year". Alan Henry in the sister publication Motoring News adopted the same notation. These two 741s were the first to receive the benefit of "Jenks notation", but OldRacingCars.com uses the same notation for earlier cars where it is clear that the entity was renewed in a similar way. However, note that once a car moves into private hands, the Jenks notation is typically removed, as there is then far less chance of knowing if a monocoque has been replaced.
