Brian's father, Hubert, was a farmer who followed the family tradition but was slightly more mechanical than his predecessors. Aside from passing on mechanical interest to Brian, Hubert demonstrated the first combine harvester in Northern Ireland in 1942. Brian himself was the first person to do a 100mph lap of Kirkistown and was also a noted hillclimber. He also drove rally cars and won the Irish Tarmac rally championship.
