Born in India, and descended from a military family - his father was a lieutenant in the Gurkha Rifles regiment at the time of Chris' birth - Williams studied engineering before racing cars, and also, initially, rally cars. Raced in sportscars before moving to single-seaters and he raced alongside his other commitment of running a garage in Surrey. Killed during Formula 2 testing. Full name was Christopher Michael Mayo Williams.
