A five time Grand Prix winner, Watson started racing as a teenager in 1963 in Ireland, but it took a lot of time, effort and grit to break through not only to Formula 1, but to win - taking a win for Penske in 1976. Watson had good and bad years, but took a welcome win at the 1981 British Grand Prix, and also won in his last full season of Grand Prix racing in 1983. From 1984, he carried on racing successfully in sportscars until 1990. He initially became a TV commentator (which he still does) but has since also worked as a journalist and for a while ran his performance driving school at Silverstone.
