A jeweler from Altrincham, whose father, who later became the mayor of Bury, founded the company in 1905, which is still going strong, and John remained involved until his death with the company. John, for a short while, returned for Chevron linked historic festivals, but preferred to keep these to a minimum. A popular, but somewhat reclusive man, he didn't really look like a classic racing driver, but his results were solid enough to gain him respect in the sport. John, who raced in Formula Atlantic, was primarily a sportscar driver who won the 1969 RAC British Sportscar Championship and then at the end of his full-time career in 1976 won the 2-litre title of the same championship.
