MidWest Division SCCA Formula B 1975

Bob Young retained his MidWest Division title in a Lola again, but this time had a new Lola T360, and won at Hutchinson in May, Ponca City in July, and La Junta two weeks. Mike Winn was second in the table with the ex-Gordon Smiley, ex-David Loring Merlyn Mk 21, winning Lake Afton in August, with Porter Brownlee next up in the sister Mk 21. Brownlee started the season well with a win at Greater Southwest Raceway in SWDiv in January and then finished second to Bobby Rahal at Stuttgart, but only picked up three more points all season. The underfinanced Dorsey Schroeder won at Mid-America Raceway in August in his ageing Brabham BT35, and Bob Schutt was also back with his newer BT38 and won at Mid-America Raceway in September. James King had a pretty terrible time in the Pro series with his rebuilt March 73B but won the Hoosier Grand Prix National at IRP in late September. George Gettel also scored nine points for winning the FB class at the Mitch Nalda Memorial National at Roswell Airport in September.

Tim Cooper picked up a couple of points somewhere in a March, presumably his usual hired Rutledge Oil/Doug Shierson Racing 75B but maybe his own older 73B, and Bill Brown was third in class at Ponca City and second at Lake Afton in his old Brabham. Overall, numbers declined from 14 to nine points scorers.

Midwest Division sources

Race results for Midwest Division Nationals from 1970 to 1978 have been kindly provided by veteran MiDiv historian Rocky Entriken. We also have some background information from Competition Press up to about 1973, when its interest in such events waned considerably, but we know little of the goings-on away from these events and are are keen to acquire or borrow 1960s, 1970s and 1980s copies of SCCA regional publications from this Division. The key ones are:

  • Checkpoint (Kansas City Region)
  • Course Record (Arkansas Region)
  • The Echo (Southern Illinois Region)
  • Exhaust Notes (Nebraska) - full archive available at nrsccahistory.com.
  • Gasket Gazette (Oklahoma Region)
  • Neokla Observer (NE Oklahoma Region), renamed Sports Car Observer in 1980
  • The Offside Undo (Kansas Region)
  • Redline (Colorado Region)
  • Steerin’ Column (Mid-South Region)
  • Wheelspin (St. Louis Region)
  • Witches Wail (Wichita Region)

We are also keen to get scans of entry lists from SCCA Nationals for this division.
