South East Division SCCA Formula B 1975

Formula B had pretty much died out in Southeast Division by 1975, and the Formula races were competed by Formula Ford, Formula Super Vee and Formula C cars, all of which existed in Florida Region or Central Florida Region in reasonable numbers. North Carolina Region member Tom Pumpelly was running in the Canadian series, but used a National at Summit Point to shake down a new car, and won the Division almost by accident. Jim Crawley returned from a half-season of British Formula Atlantic and took in a National at Bridgehampton in late September, which he won easily in his "spare" Chevron B27.

The list of scheduled National and Regional events shows that SEDiv was moving on from the days of airfield tracks to dedicated facilities, and many of the races were at Florida Regions' PBIR, Central Florida Region's new home at Gainesville Raceway, Atlanta Region's Road Atlanta and Buccaneer Region's Savannah International Raceway. North Carolina Region's usual Spring National at Virginia International Raceway did not take place as the track was closed down.

Final standings

1. Tom Pumpelly March [75B] North Carolina 13 pts
2. J. [Jim] Crawley Chevron [B27] Florida 9 pts
3. Walter Wilkins Royale Old Dominion 6 pts

Southeast Division sources

What we know of Southeast Division racing in this period comes from Competition Press & Autoweek's reports on SCCA Nationals and the SCCA's own Sports Car magazine. We are keen to learn more and are therefore very keen to acquire or borrow 1960s, 1970s and 1980s copies of SCCA regional publications from this Division. The known ones are:

  • The Checker (Central Florida Region)
  • CARolina Newsletter (Central Carolina Region)
  • The Racket (Tennessee Valley Region)
  • Regional Notes (Florida Region)
  • Rich Mixture (Southern West Virginia Region)
  • Sowega Newsletter (Sowega Region - became Chavaga Region in 1968)
  • Sports Racing News (Alabama Region)
  • Steering Wheel (Atlanta Region)

We are also keen to get scans of entry lists from SCCA Nationals in this Division.
