Suffered a huge accident at Road Atlanta in 1995, which nearly killed him. He retired immediately afterwards and worked on the development of safety features (mostly armco design) for racing circuits. Then in 1998, he moved to Cuba, where he has run a few fishing resorts and is currently based in Cayo Santa Maria. As well as his resorts, he runs fishing tours. Also sometimes based in Milan. Barbazza often performed far better than his machinery often allowed, winning the 1987 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, and taking two impressive points scoring places in a Minardi in 1993.
